Today I had my interview for my internship, which I'll participate in in phase two of my time abroad. I was placed at Good Dog and Metal Dragon films, which are actually two independent filmmakers. The job description said that they were looking for someone to get them into film festivals and promote their latest works, as well as contribute to the research and script development for their latest films. Great, I thought, I've never done promotions before, but research and scripts I know. And I'm here to learn about the film industry, so this is an awesome learning opportunity.
So the good parts about this internship:
The two filmmakers, Alan and Peter, are totally cool. As in, I walked into their office only to find that it's a loft space, and the two of them are in their mid 40s, sporting leather jackets and shaggy hair (Peter's is down to his shoulders).
It's actually in the film industry. When I interviewed over the summer, they told me not to expect to get a job in the film or television industries like I'd requested, because Ireland only has 4 television stations, there is a 15% unemployment rate (30%+ among college kids), and internships were hard to come by.
The not-so-great:
It's in Ringsend, on the opposite side of Dublin. To get there, I had to take a bus to the city center (45 minutes in rush hour traffic), then walk a good twenty minutes. Normally, not so bad. On the day of the interview, wearing heeled boots and a dress in the pouring rain? Not so much.
They seem to expect A LOT out of me. They tried to badger me into more hours right away, saying "well we get here around 10 and sometimes we don't leave until 9 or 10 at night..." to which I responded "So, 10-6 then?". I will not be bullied or guilted into working more hours than I'm required to.
Their material is unfamiliar and looks kind of unsellable. They make really niche, underground, artsy films, which look good to a very select audience. And I have to find that audience.
I guess we'll see how it goes.
